Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
