British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
